Save On Heating Costs With A Gas Fireplace Insert

While sitting down in front of a nice wood burning fireplace and staring into the flame and hearing the crackle of the wood is a very romantic concept, the fact is that nothing really compares to the efficiency of a gas fuel fireplace. If you have an existing wood burning fireplace now, you can easily convert it to gas by simply installing a gas fireplace insert…and you won’t have to do any demolition work ripping your old fireplace out.

A gas fireplace insert simply fits in to your existing fireplace, and can be found in many different models and designs. They re usually made of steel, with an outer box and an inner firebox. They allow for the air to circulate between these two components, heated, and then it’s forced out back into the room. Some come with a fan or blower already installed, while some do not. They can range in price from four or five hundred dollars, to a couple of thousand dollars.

Unless your existing wood burning fireplace has a blower installed, it will actually suck the warm air from your room where it will be exhausted out through the chimney. So by converting it over to gas with an insert, you’ll eliminate energy loss, and keep more heat circulating through out you room.

If your home is already heated by a natural gas furnace, or you have a gas stove, then a gas fuel source will be present, and all that needs to be done is to tie into the existing gas line and run it to you gas fireplace insert. When you decide to change your old wood burning fireplace over to gas, you’ll need to get a licensed gas fitter to perform the conversion. It’s not something you’ll want to attempt on your own. As long as you find a reputable gas fitter, your costs shouldn’t be that high, and you’ll soon realize your heating costs savings that will pay for it over time.

If you are going to use you gas fireplace insert, as a primary zone heater, and it’ll be running for extended periods of time, make sure to look for one that carries a ‘heater-rated’ label. These types of gas inserts are built to a higher standard then one that’s more for decoration. You will pay more for the ‘heater-rated’ version, but it will serve your needs much better, and much more efficiently.
